Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan revealed that he discontinued his formal education after the intermediate level because the type of learning he desired was not available in classrooms or textbooks. He shared this during the inauguration of the 35th Book Festival, organized by the Vijayawada Book Festival Association. Speaking at the Cherukuri Ramoji Rao Literary Stage, Kalyan elaborated on his thoughts about education and reading.

“I felt that if books were available, there would be no need for teachers,” he remarked. While he stopped attending formal classes after intermediate, he never stopped reading books, Kalyan clarified. He stated that his decision to quit formal education was neither due to academic struggles nor an inability to secure marks. “I was a good student, but the kind of education I was looking for wasn’t present in textbooks,” he added.

Kalyan cited Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore as an inspiration, noting that Tagore also pursued education outside traditional schooling. “I read about how Tagore learned at home rather than attending school, and that inspired me to follow a similar path,” he explained.

He attributed his love for books to his parents, who instilled in him a habit of reading. Highlighting the value he places on books, Kalyan said, “I wouldn’t think twice about spending a crore of rupees, but when it comes to giving away a book, I hesitate.” He equated giving someone his book to parting with a significant portion of his wealth. “If anyone asks for a book, I’d prefer to buy them one rather than give them one from my collection,” he remarked, emphasizing how integral reading is to his life.

Reflecting on his attachment to books, Kalyan said, “Without the habit of reading, I don’t know what I would have become.”
