New Delhi: The Centre has once again clarified that the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project cannot be accorded national status. Union Minister of State for Water and Hydropower Bishweshwar Tudu stated that the Kaleshwaram project does not have investment permits and therefore it has not been accorded national status.

It has been revealed that Kaleshwaram is not eligible to be included in the national project scheme. It is said that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had written letters to the Prime Minister in 2016 and 2018 to give national status to the project. Union Minister Bisweshwar Tudu gave a written answer to the question asked by Congress MP Uttam Kumar Reddy in the Lok Sabha.

He said that the Telangana government has not taken any permission regarding the project. In order to get national status the Central Water Commission (CWC) study is a must, the Project Advisory Committee should also approve, and they should take permission from the Centre for project investments.

In the letter, the Union Minister stated that Kaleshwaram should be examined by the High Power Steering Committee if permission is given and if the High Power Steering Committee gives its nod, Kaleshwaram will be given national status.
