WhatsApp Ban Looms in Russia
The Russian government is reportedly preparing to take a decisive step towards banning WhatsApp, potentially implementing the measure in 2025. Recent reports suggest that authorities are planning to block the messaging platform due to its non-compliance with local regulations, particularly its refusal to share user data with Russian security services.
Speaking on the matter, Russian Senator Artyom Sheikin and State Duma official Oleg Matveychev remarked that the decision to comply with Russian laws or exit the market rests entirely with WhatsApp's management. Senator Sheikin, in an interview with state news agency RIA Novosti, stated, "If the platform does not share user information with our security services, we may block WhatsApp starting next year." He further emphasized that foreign companies must adhere to Russian laws or face operational impossibilities in the country.
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, already faces a ban on its other platforms, Facebook and Instagram, which have been blocked in Russia since 2022. This latest warning suggests that WhatsApp might face a similar fate if it fails to meet regulatory demands.
