Manmohan Singh’s Daughter Daman Singh Shares Personal Life Details

The nation is mourning the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister for two terms and held several prominent positions, including Finance Minister. As political leaders and luminaries from various fields share their memories and tributes, his daughter Daman Singh has revealed some intriguing details about his personal life.

Daman Singh recounted the financial struggles Manmohan Singh faced during his days as a scholarship student at Cambridge University in the mid-1950s. She said, “Money was the only real problem for Manmohan Singh back then. There were many instances when he had to either skip meals or sustain himself with a Cadbury chocolate.”

She elaborated that the annual cost of tuition and living expenses at Cambridge amounted to approximately 600 pounds, while the Punjab University scholarship provided only 160 pounds per year. “Because of this, he endured significant hardships and had to rely on his father for the remaining amount. Manmohan Singh was extremely frugal, eating subsidized meals in the dining hall and avoiding outside food entirely,” Daman added.

Early Life Struggles

Daman Singh also shed light on the challenges Manmohan Singh faced during his early years in Pakistan. Born in the village of Gah, in the western part of Punjab Province, now in Pakistan, he often spoke about the difficulties of his childhood. When asked by his sister if he ever wanted to visit Pakistan, he reportedly said, “Absolutely not. I will never go to the place where my grandfather was killed.”

A Simple Yet Joyful Family Life

Manmohan Singh enjoyed singing folk songs during family gatherings and picnics, Daman revealed. Many of these personal anecdotes were documented in her book Strictly Personal: Manmohan and Gursharan, published by HarperCollins in 2014. The book delves deeply into the lives of her parents, offering a rare glimpse into the private world of the former Prime Minister.
