Can OTT Platforms Succeed Where Theaters Fall Short?
Theaters attract audiences only when a film offers something special—either through technological brilliance or a compelling storyline. Otherwise, most viewers hesitate to step into theaters. However, a strong story alone can drive a film's success, regardless of its budget or grandeur. The Telugu film Balagam proved this point by revitalizing interest in rural narratives. At a time when village sets are being recreated abroad for filming, Balagam brought the essence of real rural life to the screen, increasing interest in such themes. It also encouraged the creation of more emotionally driven family dramas, as seen in the films Bapu and Ramam Raghavam.
Starring Brahmaji and Aamani, Bapu is set in a Telangana village and was released in theaters on February 21. The film is now set to stream on JioCinema and Disney Hotstar from March 7. Meanwhile, Ramam Raghavam, featuring Dhanraj and Samuthirakani in pivotal roles, revolves around a father-son emotional bond. It was also released in theaters on February 21 and will begin streaming on ETV Win from March 14.
The key question now is whether these films, which did not receive the expected theatrical response, will find greater success on OTT platforms.
