WhatsApp Enhances Group Chats with Silent Voice Chat Option
Popular messaging application WhatsApp, which has billions of users globally, has taken another significant step to enhance user experience. To make group conversations more seamless and engaging, the platform has recently introduced a new feature called 'Voice Chat'. Unlike the existing group voice calls, this new feature promises to offer group members a novel experience. So how does this feature work? What makes it unique? Let’s find out.

The 'Voice Chat' feature has been developed to address certain limitations in traditional group voice calls. Normally, when a voice call is initiated in a WhatsApp group, all members’ phones ring simultaneously, which can be inconvenient. The 'Voice Chat' feature resolves this by functioning more discreetly.

The feature is available in larger groups with more than 33 members. A new ‘waveform’ icon now appears on the top-right corner of the group chat window. Tapping this icon brings up the “Start Voice Chat” option. By selecting this, the voice chat can be initiated.

Unlike regular calls, phones do not ring when a voice chat is started. Instead, group members receive a silent push notification. A banner also appears in the group chat window, which members can tap to join the voice chat. This gives users the flexibility to join only if they are interested, without disturbing others.

Voice chat sessions allow members to join or leave at their convenience while the session is ongoing. Even after leaving, the voice chat controls remain visible at the top of the group chat screen, enabling users to mute or hang up easily.

While participating in a voice chat, users can continue sending text messages and viewing media files within the same group. This multitasking ability enhances overall communication efficiency within the group.

As with all WhatsApp conversations, voice chats are also protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy and security.

The voice chat ends automatically when the last participant exits or if no one joins the session within 60 minutes.

This feature is particularly useful for large groups and communities. It provides a platform for topic-specific discussions without disturbing all members simultaneously. For instance, online gaming groups, friend circles, and office colleagues can connect instantly and converse conveniently.

WhatsApp is currently rolling out this feature in phases for both Android and iOS users. Soon, all users worldwide will be able to access this new voice chat facility. With this, WhatsApp has once again marked its distinctive presence in simplifying communication through technology.
