Government to Launch 10-Digit DigiPIN Code for Every Address

Government to Launch 10-Digit DigiPIN Code for Every Address
The Government of India is considering the introduction of a unique digital identity for every address, similar to the Aadhaar system that provides official individual identification for every citizen. This special identity will help in identifying houses and properties more precisely and swiftly. It is also expected to significantly aid the smooth delivery of door-to-door services.

Currently, there is no standardized system in place for managing address data in the country. As a result, some private companies are allegedly collecting address information without individuals' consent and misusing it. To prevent such misuse, the central government is preparing to integrate physical addresses into the country’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) system.

Under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Department of Posts is meticulously handling this project. A draft policy is expected to be released soon for public consultation. The new system is likely to take final shape by the end of this year. A bill may also be introduced during the Parliament’s winter session to officially establish an authority to oversee the Digital Address Framework.

The proposed DigiPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) will be a unique 10-character alphanumeric code assigned to each address based on accurate map coordinates. Unlike traditional PIN codes that cover broad geographical areas, DigiPINs will provide precise location details for individual homes and commercial establishments.
