Hijab row in Karanataka: Govt declares a three-day holiday for educational institutions
Bengaluru: With hijab-saffron row snowballing into a row, the Karnataka government has announced a three-day holiday for educational institutions in the state.
The controversy began Muslim students wearing hijabs were stopped at the main gate of Kundapura Government College in Udupi district. The gates were closed to prevent them from entering. Clashes broke out between student groups in Udupi and Mandya districts when Hindu students wearing saffron scarves.
Meanwhile, the issue of hijab came up for hearing in the Karnataka High Court. The court expressed displeasure with the riots and clashes. Students are advised to exercise restraint. The next hearing is set for Wednesday. In this context, the state government has taken a key decision. Announced a three-day holiday for educational institutions in the state. CM Basavaraj Bommai said that colleges and schools across the state were being ordered to close.
