Amaravati: In a significant ruling by the SC and ST Court in Visakhapatnam, YSRCP MLC Thota Trimurthulu has been sentenced to 18 months in jail in the tonsuring case. Additionally, a fine of ₹2.50 lakhs was imposed. The court has sentenced six people, including Trimurthulu, in this case. It is notable that the verdict has come 28 years after the incident occurred.
On December 29, 1996, five Dalits were assaulted, and two of them were forcibly tonsured. The assault also involved removing their eyeballs. This incident took place in Venkatayapalem, Ramachandrapuram Mandal in the current Konaseema district and had caused a sensation across the then united Andhra Pradesh.
