Telugu Banker Rama Mohan Rao Amara Appointed SBI Managing Director

The Central Government has appointed Telugu banker Rama Mohan Rao Amara as the Managing Director of the State Bank of India (SBI). Currently serving as Deputy Managing Director at SBI, Amara will hold the position for three years. An official notification regarding his appointment has been issued.

Notably, SBI's current Chairman, CS Setty, is also of Telugu origin. Amara will fill the vacancy created after Setty assumed the Chairman's role. SBI's leadership structure includes one Chairman and four Managing Directors. With Amara's appointment, the fourth Managing Director position has now been filled.

The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) revealed that nine candidates were interviewed for the position. Eventually, Amara emerged as the recommended candidate for the role.

A Banking Career Spanning 29 Years
Rama Mohan Rao Amara is a seasoned banker with 29 years of experience at SBI. He previously served as Managing Director and CEO of SBI Cards and Payment Services (SBI Card).

Amara began his banking career in 1991 as a Probationary Officer (PO) at SBI. Over the years, he gained extensive experience in credit, risk management, and international banking, both in India and abroad.

His foreign assignments included serving as CEO of SBI’s Singapore and Chicago branches. He also held the role of President and CEO of SBI’s California branch, showcasing his expertise in global banking operations.
