India’s First Train with an ATM Launched on Panchavati Express
The Bank of Maharashtra has installed an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) on board the Panchavati Express, which runs from Mumbai to Manmad. This marks the first time in the history of Indian Railways that an ATM has been set up on a train. The ATM has been placed in the pantry space—typically a small room—located at the end of the Air-Conditioned Chair Car coach. A dedicated shutter system has been installed for this purpose. According to railway officials, the trial run has already been successful, establishing the Panchavati Express as the first train in India to offer onboard ATM services.

This ATM facility allows passengers to withdraw cash even while the train is in motion. It was introduced under the Indian Railways' Innovative and Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (INFRIS). The initiative was made possible through a partnership between the Bhusawal Division of Indian Railways and the Bank of Maharashtra.

“The results have been encouraging. Passengers can now withdraw cash while travelling. We will continue to monitor the performance of the ATM,” said Bhusawal Divisional Railway Manager Iti Pandey.

Although the ATM is located in an AC coach, Iti Pandey clarified that all passengers from the 22 coaches of the Panchavati Express can access it through the vestibule connections between coaches. In addition to cash withdrawals, passengers can also use the machine to order chequebooks and obtain bank account statements, according to Pandey.

To ensure security, a special shutter system has been installed for the ATM, and it is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV cameras. Railway officials stated that if this service receives a positive response from passengers, there is potential for its expansion to additional trains.
