Omar Abdullah’s Divorce Plea: Apex Court Recommends Fresh Round of Talks
The Supreme Court of India has advised former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his wife Payal Abdullah to engage in mutual discussions to resolve their ongoing marital dispute. The court issued this suggestion during a hearing held today, in response to a petition previously filed by Omar Abdullah seeking divorce from his wife.

Although the court acknowledged that a previous attempt at counselling between the couple had failed, it stated that they should be given another opportunity to resolve their issues. The Supreme Court directed both parties to sit together and peacefully deliberate on the matters that have led to their differences. The court further instructed that this mediation process should be completed within three weeks.

Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah have been living separately for several years. In 2016, Omar Abdullah approached a family court seeking a divorce from his wife. However, the family court rejected his petition. Following this, Omar Abdullah appealed to the Delhi High Court, which upheld the decision of the family court. Subsequently, in the previous year, he moved the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court's verdict.

The court's latest suggestion comes in the wake of this ongoing legal battle, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful and mutual resolution despite past attempts at reconciliation having failed.
