Indian IAF Pilot to Embark on Space Journey in NASA-ISRO Mission

A significant chapter in India’s space exploration history is set to unfold as Group Captain Shubanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force (IAF) prepares to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Axiom Space Inc. announced on Tuesday that Shubanshu Shukla will serve as a pilot on the Axiom Mission 4, scheduled for launch on May 29.
This prestigious private astronaut mission is a joint venture between the United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The mission will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The crew, including Shubanshu Shukla, will lift off at 10:33 PM IST on May 29.
Alongside Shubanshu Shukla, the mission crew comprises Commander Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut; Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland; and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.
Upon arrival at the ISS, the team is expected to stay for approximately 14 days. During this period, they will engage in a range of scientific research and commercial activities. According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, the crew will focus on areas such as space technology, space bio-manufacturing, and bio-astronautics.
This mission is seen as a vital step toward strengthening India’s capabilities in human spaceflight. It will provide valuable expertise for future endeavors including ISRO’s Gaganyaan program and the proposed Indian space station.
