Vikkatakavi to Present a Unique Period Experience, Says Director Pradeep Maddali
Vikkatakavi, ZEE5's upcoming period detective web series, will begin streaming on November 28 in Telugu and Tamil. Produced by SRT Entertainments and directed by Pradeep Maddali, the series stars Naresh Agastya and Megha Akash in lead roles. This series, set against a Telangana backdrop, marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind.
Director Maddali explained that writer Teja Desraj, known for films like Awe and Kalki, developed the story, which caught ZEE5's interest. Maddali found the concept challenging and captivating, agreeing to direct the series under a budget-friendly framework set by ZEE5 and SRT Entertainments. The show spans multiple timelines—the 1940s and 1970s—requiring intricate attention to period details such as sets, costumes, and dialogue.
The production aimed to create an authentic visual experience, blending historical accuracy with suspenseful storytelling. The sets were largely shot at real locations, including Ramoji Film City, to deliver an immersive narrative. Maddali credited his talented team, including cinematographer Shoaib and colorist Sanjeev, for bringing a fresh perspective to the series.
The plot centers on the fictional Amaragiri estate in Telangana, weaving a complex narrative involving a legendary curse dating back to pre-independence India. Maddali explained that the title Vikkatakavi draws inspiration from the clever, spy-like traits of Tenali Ramakrishna, aligning with the main character’s detective skills.
Naresh Agastya takes on the lead role as a sharp-minded detective, blending wit and intelligence, while Megha Akash plays a modern princess with a background in psychiatry. The series explores whether local myths are genuine or rooted in deeper mysteries. Vikkatakavi has already sparked plans for a second season, with story development underway.
The series’ period-specific music score was composed by Ajay Arasada, enhancing its vintage atmosphere. The ensemble cast also features Siju Menon, Raghu Kunchi, and several other notable actors in key roles. Director Maddali is also working on new projects in the sci-fi horror and fantasy-action genres.
