Welspun Foundation to Empower Farmers and Improve Cotton Quality in Ranga Reddy District
Hyderabad, 09th May 2023: Welspun Foundation (WF) announced the launch of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) Project for the farmers of Ranga Reddy District in 2019. The initiative was introduced to promote sustainable farming practices and improve the livelihoods of cotton farmers in the region. WF has taken this initiative to cover 5033 farmers in 91 villages, forming 121 learning groups (LGs), each consisting of 40-45 farmers. The project covers a total cotton area of 14214 acres, and with other crops, the total area reaches 29158 acres.
The BCI project is designed to educate farmers on soil analysis test-based application of nutrients. WF collects soil samples from the farmers every year, which are then used to provide information on the correct application of fertilizers and improve soil fertility. As part of this year's initiative, a total of 77 soil samples were collected and sent for analysis to the Rajendranagar Govt. Soil Testing Lab.
One of the key aspects of the project is the soil sample testing activity, which was conducted as a one-on-one activity. Field staff from WF went to the field with the farmer to take the soil sample. In addition to the soil sample testing activity, WF also conducted collective farmers' meetings and training. A total of 77 soil samples were taken from 38 villages as part of this year's initiative. The highest soil samples were taken from Chevella Taluq, with 50 samples from 24 villages. The soil testing activity has helped educate the farmers about the correct application of fertilizers and improve soil fertility.
"We are committed to sustainable development and inclusive growth. Our Better Cotton Initiative project in Ranga Reddy District is a step towards empowering farmers with the knowledge and skills to adopt sustainable farming practices. We are proud to contribute to the improvement of the livelihoods of cotton farmers in the region." Welspun Spokesperson said.
The BCI project has helped the farmers of Ranga Reddy District adopt sustainable and profitable farming practices. The initiative has contributed to the improvement of the livelihoods of cotton farmers in the region. WF has been striving to educate the farmers about the importance of quality cotton and help them test the soil. The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) project is integral to this effort. The BCI project also provides training to the farmers on seed selection, crop rotation, pest management, and other farming practices. This helps educate the farmers about the correct application of fertilizers and improve soil fertility.
The initiative has been well-received by the farmers in the region. "We are grateful to WF for introducing the BCI project in our village. We have learned a lot about sustainable farming practices and how to improve the quality of our cotton. The soil testing has been particularly helpful in determining the correct application of fertilizers," said a farmer from Ranga Reddy District.
