CM Jagan inaugurates MGR Sangam and Nellore barrages
SPSR Nellore, September 6: Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy inaugurated Mekapati Gautham Reddy Sangam and Nellore barrages on Tuesday. He also opened the newly constructed Penna barrage-cum-road bridge which will facilitate smooth transportation between Sangam-Podalakur and Nellore-Kovur.
Water stored at Sangam barrage can irrigate 3.85 lakh acres and Nellore barrage can bring 99,525 acres under irrigation. As part of Jalayagnam, former Chief Minister late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR) laid foundation to modernisation of Sangam barrage in 2006. After 16 years, YSR’s son Jagan Reddy dedicated both barrages to the nation. Earlier, he unveiled the statues of YSR and former minister late Mekapati Gautham Reddy.
Addressing a public meeting, the CM said that MGR Sangam and Nellore barrages will provide water to irrigate 4 lakh acres in Atmakur, Kovur, Sarvepalli and Kavali Assembly constituencies. “The YSRCP government spent Rs 320 crore for completion of Sangam and Nellore barrages,” he explained. Ministers, YSRCP MPs and MLAs, and officials were present.
