Adani Tarnishes India’s Image, Jagan Tarnishes Andhra Pradesh’s: YS Sharmila
YS Sharmila, President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), submitted a memorandum to Governor Abdul Nazeer today, seeking a probe into the Jagan-Adani power deal. She alleged irregularities in electricity purchases during the previous administration and demanded an investigation into alleged bribes amounting to ₹1,750 crores. Sharmila described the power agreement as highly beneficial to Adani but a massive burden on the state’s citizens.
Sharmila accused the former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of tarnishing the state’s image internationally. Referring to the alleged corruption, she said the issue has attracted global attention, with widespread discussions on the misuse of public funds. She remarked, "Adani has brought shame to the nation, and Jagan has done the same to Andhra Pradesh."
The APCC has also called for the cancellation of the deal and demanded an investigation within the state, in line with the national Congress Party's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe.
Allegations on Power Prices:
Sharmila highlighted discrepancies in the purchase of electricity, alleging that units available at ₹1.99 were purchased at ₹2.49. With additional charges, the effective price rose to over ₹5 per unit. She criticized the 25-year agreement as a financial trap for not just the current generation but future ones, potentially amounting to lakhs of crores in public money being misused.
Sharmila also questioned the then opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu for his silence on the matter, despite earlier protests by his Telugu Desam Party (TDP) when in opposition. She asked if Naidu’s inaction stemmed from fear of Adani or Prime Minister Modi, further demanding clarity on whether any meetings occurred between TDP leaders and Adani.
