IMD Issues Warnings for Andhra Pradesh Amid Deep Depression in Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall across several parts of Andhra Pradesh from Monday to Thursday. Light to moderate showers are expected, with some regions likely to experience heavy rainfall. According to the Visakhapatnam Meteorological Centre, a deep depression in the western Bay of Bengal is the primary factor behind this weather pattern. Areas such as Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, and Bapatla are anticipated to receive significant rainfall.

The deep depression is currently moving in a southwesterly direction and is expected to approach the southern coastal Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu coastline by Tuesday. The department has warned that winds over the sea could reach speeds of up to 55 km/h until Wednesday. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until Thursday. Additionally, authorities are issuing a third-level warning to all ports in the state as a precautionary measure.

Meteorologists noted that the depression's unpredictable movement over the past six days has posed challenges for accurate forecasting. Initially formed as a low-pressure system on November 16 in the southeastern Bay of Bengal, it intensified into a depression and was expected to move toward the Tamil Nadu coast. However, within two days, it strengthened into a deep depression and veered toward the Andhra Pradesh coastline. Subsequently, it weakened into a depression by Saturday and altered its trajectory due to reduced influence from westerly winds originating in northern India.

Experts explained that the disorganized behavior is attributed to unfavorable conditions in the west-central Bay of Bengal. Such phenomena are rare, the officials added.
