The high-voltage five-match Test series between India and Australia, known as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, concluded on Sunday, with the visiting Australian team clinching the series 3-1. After a decade-long gap, Australia reclaimed the prestigious trophy, leading to significant celebrations by the players. However, controversy arose during the trophy presentation ceremony when Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, despite being present on the field, was not invited by Cricket Australia to participate in the event. The fact that the trophy itself is named after Gavaskar and former Australian captain Allan Border has fueled criticism of the snub.

During the ceremony, only Allan Border presented the trophy to the Australian team. Sunil Gavaskar expressed dissatisfaction over not being invited to the event. He lamented, “I was on the ground. It would have been a joyous moment to present the trophy alongside my best friend Allan Border. I always enjoy participating in such events.”

Gavaskar further expressed regret, stating that, given the significance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, he would have been even more delighted to be part of the presentation ceremony. Commenting on the series result, Gavaskar added, “It doesn’t matter which team won. Australia played well and deserved the victory.”

Gavaskar shared his views during an interview with ‘Code Sports.’ The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which began in the 1996-1997 season, has grown into one of the most prestigious competitions in Test cricket. This season witnessed packed stadiums as cricket enthusiasts flocked to watch the matches live.
