Hyderabad Metro Rail Faces Heat Over Betting Apps; PIL Filed in High Court

The ongoing controversy surrounding the promotion of illegal betting applications in the Telugu states has now extended to Hyderabad Metro Rail. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Telangana High Court, alleging that advertisements related to betting apps were conducted within metro trains.
The PIL was filed by advocate Nagoor Babu, who contended that Hyderabad Metro Rail, as a vital component of public transportation, must operate with a high sense of responsibility. He urged the judiciary to take action against the organization for allegedly promoting unlawful betting platforms.
In his petition, Nagoor Babu named the Central Government, the Chief Secretary of the Telangana State Government, the Director General of Police, the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail, and the Enforcement Directorate as respondents.
Upon hearing the plea, the High Court bench scheduled the next hearing for April 24.
The issue has gained gravity due to the reported financial losses suffered by a large number of youth across the Telugu states, allegedly caused by involvement in betting apps. There have also been incidents of suicides linked to this trend, further intensifying public concern.
Authorities have previously filed cases against several film celebrities, social media influencers, and YouTubers in connection with the promotion of betting apps. Notices have been served to some individuals, while others have been questioned by law enforcement.
