Repeated Earth Tremors Shake Mundlamuru: Three Days of Panic
Residents of Mundlamuru village in Prakasam district are living in constant fear as a series of earth tremors have shaken the region over the past three days. On Monday, after enduring tremors over the weekend, the villagers experienced two more episodes of seismic activity—once in the morning and twice at night.
The first tremor on Monday occurred at 10:24 AM with a magnitude of 1.8 on the Richter scale. Two more tremors followed at 8:16 PM and 8:19 PM, centered around Mundlamuru and Marella villages. The sudden noises and shaking prompted panic among residents, forcing many to rush out of their homes and shops in fear.
Authorities have identified the epicenter as being between Mundlamuru and Umamaheswarapuram. The tremors appear to be concentrated around the Gundlakamma river region. Villagers reported damage to the local model school building, which left students too frightened to attend classes indoors. As a precaution, lessons are now being conducted under trees.
Over the weekend, the region experienced similar seismic activity. On Saturday at 10:35 AM, a tremor measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale struck, followed by another on Sunday at 10:41 AM with a magnitude of 2.1.
Responding to the situation, seismologist Raghavan noted the need for further research to determine why tremors have been recurring at the same times over consecutive days. He suggested that studies of nearby reservoirs and rivers, including the Gundlakamma, are necessary. Raghavan also speculated that the tremors could be linked to hydro-seismicity, possibly caused by a weak zone within the earthquake swarm.
Mundlamuru's tahsildar, Srikanth, confirmed that no loss of life or property damage has been reported so far. "We have sent reports to the collectorate and will proceed with further actions based on their instructions," he stated.
