Former Pakistan Cricketers Express Displeasure Over Sunil Gavaskar's Remarks
Several former Pakistan cricketers have strongly objected to recent comments made by former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar regarding Pakistan’s potential participation in the upcoming Asia Cup tournament. The comments have sparked criticism from cricketing veterans including legendary batter Javed Miandad.

Speaking to a news channel recently, Sunil Gavaskar expressed doubt over Pakistan’s participation in the Asia Cup, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, citing the current political climate. Gavaskar stated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) generally follows the directives of the Indian government, and added that political tensions between the two nations could prevent Pakistan from taking part in the tournament.

These remarks followed a deadly attack on tourists in Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. India has accused Pakistan of being behind the attack, leading to heightened tensions and indications that India might withdraw from the Indus Waters Treaty and take retaliatory measures.

Javed Miandad voiced deep disappointment in response to Gavaskar’s comments. Speaking to TelecomAsia.net, he said, “I cannot believe that Sunny Bhai would say something like this.” Miandad recalled the strong friendship he shares with Gavaskar, both on and off the field. “He is a highly respected and humble person who has always stayed away from politics,” Miandad said.

Former spinner Iqbal Qasim echoed similar sentiments. He stated that he was initially unable to believe that Gavaskar had made those remarks. “Gavaskar is a very responsible person, admired by fans on both sides of the border. Sports should not be mixed with politics,” Qasim said.

Former cricketer Basit Ali responded more sharply, describing Gavaskar’s remarks as “unwise.” He demanded that evidence be presented before making allegations. “Let the investigation conclude. Cricket should remain above political hostilities,” Basit Ali advised.

Former leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed emphasized that legendary players should act with a sense of responsibility. Citing a quote by Hazrat Ali, he said, “Do not make decisions in anger, for they lead to regret.” He underlined Pakistan’s importance in the cricketing world and warned against politicizing the sport.

In contrast, Pakistan’s ODI captain Mohammad Rizwan maintained a neutral stance. Reiterating his long-held view, he said, “Regardless of what happens politically, cricket between India and Pakistan should not stop.”
