Rohit, Kohli may not play in 2027 World Cup: Sunil Gavaskar

India's star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were expected to appear in white kits for the national team during the upcoming England tour, possibly marking their farewell to the longest format of the game. However, both players surprised fans and the cricketing world by announcing their retirement from Test cricket even before the series began.
Having already retired from international T20s, One Day Internationals (ODIs) now remain the only format in which they represent India. Virat Kohli has openly expressed his desire to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup, while Rohit Sharma is also reportedly keen on participating in the 50-over tournament.
Despite these intentions, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that it may not be realistically feasible for both players to feature in the 2027 World Cup. Speaking to Sports Today, Sunil Gavaskar remarked that the possibility of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the 2027 World Cup largely depends on the selectors' decisions.
“Their participation in the next ODI World Cup depends entirely on how well they perform in this format over the next two years,” said Sunil Gavaskar.
He added, “Both of them are legends in the ODI format. Given that they’ve already retired from the other two formats, it’s a valid question whether they can maintain form in a limited number of ODIs until 2027. If you ask me now, I’d say it’s difficult. But if they score consecutive centuries in the interim, perhaps there’s a chance.”
