Who Should Replace Kohli? Kumble Names His Pick
Ahead of the Indian cricket team’s crucial tour of England, the unexpected withdrawal of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the Test format has stirred considerable discussion. Their exit, particularly Virat Kohli’s absence, has created a significant gap in India’s top-order batting lineup—specifically at the number four position, where Kohli had long been a dependable pillar.

Amidst this backdrop, former India captain and legendary spinner Anil Kumble has shared his opinion on who should fill the void. He suggested that Karun Nair, who has been delivering consistent performances in domestic cricket and proving his mettle in the IPL, should be selected for the England tour and given the opportunity to bat at number four.

Speaking on the matter, Anil Kumble said, “Karun Nair, who has been scoring heavily in domestic cricket, fully deserves a comeback into the Indian team. He is capable of batting at number four. In the current scenario, a player with experience in English conditions is crucial for the team. Karun Nair has played county cricket and is well-versed with the conditions there.”

Although Karun Nair is over 33 years of age, Anil Kumble stated that he remains exceptionally fit and carries the spirit of a young player. “If given a chance, it will inspire more young cricketers to pursue first-class cricket passionately. When outstanding performances in domestic cricket are not recognised, it can be discouraging,” Kumble added.

Karun Nair played a pivotal role in leading the Vidarbha team to the championship in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy season. In 16 innings, he amassed 863 runs at an impressive average of 53.93, finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament. His tally included four centuries and two half-centuries.

The 33-year-old has played six Test matches for India so far. He made his debut during the 2016 home series against England and stunned the cricketing world by scoring a triple century (303 not out) in only his third Test, in Chennai, also against England. His last Test appearance came in March 2017.

Currently, Karun Nair is part of the Delhi Capitals squad in the Indian Premier League.

With Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal almost certain to open the innings, the choice for the number four position has become a subject of keen interest. It remains to be seen whether the team management will take Kumble’s recommendation into account.
