Kandula Durgesh Alleges Conspiracy Behind Theatre Shutdowns During Pawan Kalyan’s Film Releases
State Tourism and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh has made sensational remarks regarding developments in the Telugu film industry, particularly the controversies emerging during the release of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's films. He alleged that there is undoubtedly a conspiracy behind issues such as theatre shutdowns occurring specifically at the time of Pawan Kalyan’s movie releases.

Kandula Durgesh questioned why certain individuals in the industry who remained silent during Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy's tenure as Chief Minister are now claiming to have no ties with the government. “During the previous government, film industry leaders stood with folded hands. But now they act as if they have no relation with the government. How appropriate is that?” he asked.

Addressing the broader issues plaguing the industry, Kandula Durgesh stated, “Most theatres across both Telugu-speaking states are under lease; very few are operated by their actual owners. This leasing system, which has been in place for over a decade, is now creating complications. Our question is: why do such issues arise only during the release of Pawan Kalyan’s films?”

The Minister emphasized that the government is fully committed to supporting the film industry. “Both Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan are dedicated to the well-being of the industry,” he said. “We are ready to extend all necessary support, but we need complete clarity on the facts to determine how best to assist. In the past, actions were taken out of vengeance under the previous regime. Why is the same behavior continuing now? We are extending complete support to producers, exhibitors, and distributors,” he added.

Speaking on Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's remark that he was given a “remarkable return gift,” Kandula Durgesh stated, “He was deeply hurt. He has constantly advocated for the betterment of the film industry and insisted that no troubles be created, even regarding ticket pricing. We have extended our support to all, big or small producers alike. Despite this, the emergence of such situations is distressing.”

The Minister revealed that a new film policy committee will soon be established to devise a universally acceptable approach. “Even after all these initiatives, why does the notion of a theatre shutdown arise at this particular time? Exhibitors from East and West Godavari districts have already indicated their reluctance to participate in a bandh, citing financial losses. We will uncover the reasons behind this environment. How can one dismiss the possibility of a conspiracy?” he questioned.

Kandula Durgesh criticized the Film Chamber for failing to provide clarity when reports surfaced about a theatre shutdown starting June 1. He took exception to Damodar Prasad’s comments dismissing ties with the government and denying the need for governmental support. “The government and the industry must work together. Aren’t joint collectors part of the government? Isn’t it through them that welfare is ensured?” he said. He also expressed disapproval over associations that have not made the effort to engage with the government even after a year.

Going forward, Kandula Durgesh made it clear that the government will not entertain individual requests. “Only associations representing various sectors collectively will be engaged, and their concerns and suggestions will be addressed,” he said. “As the Deputy Chief Minister rightly pointed out, they have given a return gift, and we shall respond accordingly. If they believe government support is unnecessary, they will have to face the consequences. The government will maintain a firm stance,” he warned. He assured that a thorough inquiry will be conducted into the matter and the facts will be brought to light.
