Mukhtar Naqvi steps down as union minister, submits resignation to PM
New Delhi, July 6: Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Wednesday resigned as the Union Minister of Minority Affairs. His Rajya Sabha term is ending on Thursday (July 7). He handed over his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources, the PM in the Cabinet meeting held today showered praises on services rendered by outgoing union minister. Naqvi’s resignation gave rise to speculation that the BJP might consider him either for Vice President or Governor post.
In the wake of criticism by Muslim countries over comments made suspended BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammad, the BJP leadership is seriously considering Naqvi for Vice President post so that relations can be normalised with his visit to Islamic countries.
Besides, analysts say Mukhtar Abbas is the right choice for the Rajya Sabha chairman as he can run Upper House smoothly because of his political experience and good relations with Opposition parties.
