Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has made noteworthy remarks regarding senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma amid ongoing speculations about their future in international cricket. The comments come in the backdrop of widespread criticism of the duo following their disappointing performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Recent rumors suggest that Rohit Sharma might announce his retirement after the final Test match of the series, adding fuel to the ongoing debates about the next phase of Indian cricket. Speaking about the issue, Gavaskar emphasized the need for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors to deliberate carefully and make crucial decisions about the futures of senior players.

Gavaskar pointed out the lack of adequate contributions from senior players in the top order, stating, “Everything depends on the selectors. The expected support from senior players hasn’t been there. The top order must provide the required support. If the top order fails, why blame the lower order? It’s evident that the senior players haven’t delivered as expected.”

The former captain also highlighted that the absence of impactful performances from key players in the top order has significantly affected India’s performance in the series. Gavaskar remarked, “India has fallen behind in the series primarily due to the top order’s lack of contributions. This has been a major factor, especially in challenging conditions like those in Australia.”

Gavaskar's candid observations underline the growing pressure on selectors, led by chief Ajit Agarkar, to address the pressing issue of senior players’ form and their role in the team’s future composition.
