Misha Agarwal Dies by Suicide Due to Declining Followers; Taapsee Expresses Grief
A tragic incident has underscored the profound impact of social media on today’s youth. Misha Agarwal, a well-known content creator and law student, died by suicide on April 24—just two days before her 25th birthday. According to her family members, she was suffering from severe depression triggered by a decline in her Instagram followers.

Misha Agarwal had gained considerable recognition on social media and had set a goal of reaching one million followers on Instagram. However, her family stated that the number of followers had recently begun to drop, which deeply affected her emotionally. They said she felt she had lost her value and endured intense mental distress as a result.

“She would cry in our arms, terrified that her career was over because her Instagram followers were declining. We tried to reassure her that social media is not everything in life and urged her not to worry so much about it,” her family expressed in sorrow. They added that Misha had completed her LL.B. degree and was preparing for the PCS-J (Judicial Services) examinations, assuring her of a promising future. Despite their efforts to console and support her, they said she was unable to overcome her thoughts. “We never imagined she would take such a drastic step over Instagram followers,” they said tearfully.

Reacting to the incident, leading film actress Taapsee expressed deep concern over the growing trend of assessing a person’s worth based on the number of likes and followers on social media. “I have long feared a day like this. Instead of valuing real life and love, people are beginning to equate likes and follower counts in the virtual world with affection. This virtual love is overshadowing real relationships. It’s heartbreaking to see that likes are being valued more than earned degrees. This incident has shaken me,” Taapsee wrote on her social media account.
