Dhairya is training women to drive and make them independent in our society
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality. One such organisation which is striving for women’s equality is Dhairya Foundation.
Dhairya is a non-profit social enterprise providing free commercial driver training and market linkage to women from low-income groups in Hyderabad. The foundation’s vision is to address the problem of skill deficit among urban poor women by identifying, and providing driver training and skill development program to eligible women belonging to economically backward classes and low-income groups. The aspiration behind our initiative is to develop job specific skills, managerial and entrepreneurial capabilities among the beneficiaries, thereby empowering them to seek or create better income generation options for themselves.
Dhairya was founded in September 2019 by Prasanna Dommu and Tindu Nikhat, this non-profit enterprise is incubated with We Hub, a govt of Telangana initiative for women entrepreneurs.
As a pilot project, Dhairya trained 4 women domestic workers in driving autos. The women successfully completed training and became licensed auto rickshaw drivers in Feb 2020. The Foundation held a rally to launch the women on the occasion of Women's day in March 2020. To get autos for Anitha and Kavitha who are part of these women drivers, the foundation started 2 different crowdfunding campaign on Milaap.
Prasanna Dommu, one of the founder of Dhairya stated “Post lockdown, the foundation has also started working with a private company in training women as delivery partners. So far we have successfully trained and placed 8 women drivers with a private company in Hyderabad. We also have an MOU with them to train and deploy 100 women in 2021 in Hyderabad. Currently, we are engaged in fulfilling this MOU by training women to work as delivery partners with them.”
Prasanna further pointed “With Dhairya, we want to address the problem of skill deficit among urban poor women, while also developing managerial and entrepreneurial abilities in the beneficiaries so that they become capable of generating sustainable income in the long run. In other words, we want to give the women Dhairya - or courage - to realise their full potential and become financially independent.”
