Doctors at Amor Hospitals perform 9-hour long complex surgery to remove rare bone cancer and save the leg

Hyderabad, July 9th, 2022: Doctors at Amor Hospitals, a Multi Super Specialty healthcare facility in the city, have recently performed a 9-hour long complex surgery to remove a rare type of cancer located behind the knee of an aged patient. The surgery was performed by team led by  Dr. Kishore B. Reddy, who is rated among India’s Best Ortho Oncology Surgeons, which helped save the leg of the patient, which otherwise would have required amputation.
 
The 66-years-old patient, Mr. K Dharma Reddy is a retired Professor, and was brought to Amor Hospitals on the complaint of severe pain in the knee and leg. Earlier, the patient was being administered treatment assuming the pain was resultant of varicose veins. And after the efforts put in by the family and when the pain did the subside, he was brought to Dr. Kishore B Reddy for advanced diagnosis and treatment.
 
Commenting on the patient’s condition and surgery, Dr. Kishore B. Reddy, Head Orthopedics  & Orthopedics Oncology Surgeon, Amor Hospitals said, “We identified a mass behind the knee, which got intertwined with artery, vein, nerve, and the muscle in the region. Biopsy of the mass established presence of chondrosarcoma, a rare type of cancer, which might not cause any signs or symptoms, but cause maximum damage, even necessitating amputation of the leg. Even in this case, one available option was amputation, but we took up the challenge to operate the tumor, to save the leg. A 9-hour long procedure was conducted, in which my team including Dr. Surya Keerthana, Microvascular & Plastic Surgeon, and other experts, operated on the patient to root out the mass, and even reconstructed artery to ensure blood circulation is restored. A blood vessel extracted from the other leg was used in reconstruction. And the most intricate aspect of this surgery was to perform the procedure by keeping the patient in prone position (keeping patient in chest down and back up position), which makes the approach complicated.”
 
Post this complex surgery, the patient was put under observation and on day-5 he was made to walk successfully. The patient got discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, June 5th, and is now in the position to even climb the stairs without any external support.
