వరస ఎలా కడతారు? How Telugu varasa works
తెలుగు కుటుంబాల్లో ప్రతి బంధువుకూ ఒక వరస ఉంటుంది. ఎవరిని ఏమని పిలవాలో కొన్ని సులువైన నియమాలే చెబుతాయి:
Every relative in a Telugu family has a varasa: a place in the family that decides what you call them. A few simple rules give all of it.
- అన్నదమ్ముల పిల్లలు, అక్కచెల్లెళ్ల పిల్లలు ఒకరికొకరు అన్నాచెల్లెళ్లే: పెదనాన్న కొడుకు మీకు అన్నయ్య లేదా తమ్ముడు. Children of two brothers, or of two sisters, are brothers and sisters to each other.
- అన్నాచెల్లెళ్ల పిల్లలు బావామరదళ్లు: మేనమామ కూతురు, మేనత్త కొడుకు ఈ వరసే (బావ, మరదలు). Children of a brother and a sister are cross cousins, బావ and మరదలు: your mother's brother's daughter, your father's sister's son.
- పెళ్లితో వరస మారుతుంది: అన్న భార్య వదిన, భార్య తమ్ముడు బావమరిది, అక్కాచెల్లెళ్ల భర్తలు ఒకరికొకరు తోడల్లుడు. Marriage crosses over: an elder brother's wife is వదిన, a wife's younger brother బావమరిది, and two sisters' husbands are co-brothers.
- వయసు పేరును తేలుస్తుంది: నాన్న అన్న పెదనాన్న, నాన్న తమ్ముడు బాబాయి; మీకంటే పెద్దవాడైతే బావ, చిన్నవాడైతే బావమరిది లేదా మరిది. Age picks the word: your father's elder brother is పెదనాన్న, his younger brother బాబాయి; an older cross cousin is బావ, a younger one బావమరిది or మరిది.
- ఎంత పొడవైన వరసైనా ఈ నియమాలతోనే తేలుతుంది. అదే "వరసకు" అంటే: నిజంగా అన్న కాకపోయినా, వరసకు అన్న. Any chain, however long, comes down to these rules. That is what వరసకు means: not your brother, but a brother by varasa.

Vadina is an elder brother's wife or a spouse's elder sister; maradalu a younger brother's wife or a wife's younger sister. A cross cousin is vadina if older than you, maradalu if younger.
