How compound interest is calculated
Interest is added to the principal at every compounding date, and the next interest is worked out on the larger amount:
A = P × (1 + r ÷ n) n × T
P is the principal, r the yearly rate (8% = 0.08), n the number of times interest is added in a year and T the years. The interest is A − P.
Example: ₹1,00,000 at 8% for 10 years grows to ₹2,15,892 with yearly compounding and to ₹2,20,804 with quarterly compounding: an effective 8.24% a year.
