How simple interest is calculated
Simple interest is charged on the original amount only, for every year it is borrowed or deposited:
Interest = P × R × T ÷ 100
P is the principal, R the rate in % a year and T the time in years (months ÷ 12, days ÷ 365).
Example: ₹1,00,000 at 12% a year for 2 years earns ₹24,000 interest; ₹1,24,000 in all.
Rupee interest (రూపాయి వడ్డీ)
Family and village loans are often quoted as rupees per ₹100 per month: "one rupee interest" is ₹1 on every ₹100 each month, which is 12% a year; "two rupees" is 24% a year. ₹50,000 at ₹2 for 6 months is ₹6,000 interest, ₹1,000 a month.
Questions
Simple or compound interest: what is the difference?
Simple interest never charges interest on interest. With compound interest, unpaid interest is added to the principal, so the next period's interest is higher. Over long periods compound interest grows much faster.
How are days counted?
On a 365-day year, as banks do for most deposits and loans: 73 days is 0.2 of a year.
