How percentages are worked out
A percent is a part of 100. The three everyday questions:
X% of Y = X × Y ÷ 100 · X as a % of Y = X ÷Y × 100 · % change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100
Examples: 15% of 2,000 is 300. 450 marks out of 600 is 75%. A salary going from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 is a rise of 25%.
Good to know
- X% of Y is the same as Y% of X: 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Handy for working it out in your head.
- For GST, use the GST calculator; for "40% + 10% off", the discount calculator.
Questions
A 25% rise and then a 25% fall: am I back where I started?
No. ₹40,000 up 25% is ₹50,000, and 25% off that is ₹37,500. The way back from ₹50,000 to ₹40,000 is a fall of 20%, because the fall is counted on the bigger number.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
An interest rate going from 8% to 10% rises by 2 percentage points, but by 25% of itself. News reports mean points.
