Only about 1 baby in 25 arrives on the due date itself; most come in the two weeks either side. Your doctor may move the date after the first scan, which is more exact than counting from a period.
How the due date is worked out
By Naegele's rule, which doctors use everywhere: 40 weeks from the first day of the last period, moved for a longer or shorter cycle.
due date = first day of last period + 280 days + (cycle length − 28) days
Example: a period that started on Thursday, 1 January 2026 gives a due date of Thursday, 8 October 2026. With a 30-day cycle it is two days later, Saturday, 10 October 2026.
Good to know
- The weeks are counted from the period, about two weeks before the baby is conceived: at "4 weeks" the baby is about 2 weeks old.
- Trimesters: the first runs to 13 weeks 6 days, the second to 27 weeks 6 days, the third from 28 weeks to birth.
- The first scan measures the baby and gives a more exact date; if your doctor changes the date, go by the doctor.
Questions
Why count from the period and not from conception?
The first day of a period is a date most women know; the day of conception usually is not. So every pregnancy is counted the same way.
My cycles are irregular. Is the date still right?
Less so: with irregular cycles the period date says little about when ovulation happened. An early scan is the better guide.
