How EPF grows
Every month you pay 12% of your basic pay + DA into EPF, and your employer pays another 12%. Of the employer's share, 8.33% of pay up to the wage ceiling goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and the rest to your EPF account:
To EPS = 8.33% × (basic + DA, at most ₹25,000)
Employer to EPF = 12% × basic + DA − to EPS
Interest is worked out every month on the running balance at the yearly rate ÷ 12, but credited only at the end of the year, so it compounds once a year.
Example: on a basic + DA of ₹25,000 you pay ₹3,000 a month and so does your employer: ₹2,083 to EPS and ₹917 to EPF. At 30, with ₹2,00,000 in EPF, 5% raises and 8.25% interest, the balance at 58 is ₹1,14,73,425: ₹21,02,520 from you, ₹14,02,632 from your employer and ₹77,68,273 interest on top of today's balance.
One year by hand: on ₹15,000, ₹2,350 a month reaches EPF. The month-end balances ₹2,350, ₹4,700 … ₹28,200 add up to ₹1,83,300, so the year's interest is ₹1,83,300 × 8.25% ÷ 12 = ₹1,260.
The pension from EPS
Pension a month = pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70
The pensionable salary is your average basic + DA over the last 60 months, up to the wage ceiling. The pension is paid from 58 if you have at least 10 years of service, and is never less than ₹1,000 a month; 20 years or more add 2 bonus years. With ₹25,000 and 35 years, it is ₹25,000 × 37 ÷ 70 = ₹13,214 a month. The calculator counts service before 17 September 2026 on the old ₹15,000 ceiling, as was done when the ceiling last went up in 2014: treat it as an estimate.
Good to know
- The wage ceiling went up from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September 2026, so up to ₹2,083 a month of the employer's share now goes to EPS (it was ₹1,250) and a little less to EPF.
- Joined EPF after 1 September 2014 on pay above ₹15,000? You are usually not in EPS, and all of the employer's 12% goes to EPF: choose "No" for the pension scheme.
- Many employers pay PF only on the wage ceiling. If your payslip shows ₹3,000 a month (12% of ₹25,000) while your basic is higher, enter ₹25,000 as your basic.
- The rate is declared every year (8.25% for 2025-26). Interest is tax-free, except on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh where the employer pays nothing).
- From 58 the EPS share stops: if you work to 60, the whole 12% from the employer goes to EPF.
Questions
Is the EPS money part of my EPF balance?
No. It goes into a common pension fund and comes back as the monthly pension, so it does not show in the EPF balance and earns no interest for you.
What if I leave before 10 years of service?
You get no pension, but you can withdraw the EPS amount (worked out from a table, by years of service), or take a scheme certificate so the service counts at your next job.
Can I take the pension before 58?
Yes, from 50, but it is reduced by 4% for each year before 58, for life.
Is EPF tax-free when I withdraw it?
After five years of continuous service (jobs count together if you transferred your account), yes. Earlier withdrawals are taxed, and tax is deducted on ₹50,000 or more.
