How the scientific calculator works
Type the whole expression, then =. It follows the usual order of operations (BODMAS):
brackets → functions, ! and % → powers → × and ÷ → + and −
- Powers go right to left: 2^3^2 = 2^9 = 512. And −2² = −4, because the power comes first; (−2)² = 4.
- A number next to a bracket, π or a function multiplies: 2π, 3(4 + 5), 2sin(30).
- DEG / RAD sets the angle unit: sin 30 = 0.5 in degrees, sin(π ÷ 6) = 0.5 in radians.
- INV turns sin, cos and tan into sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹ and tan⁻¹, ln into eˣ and log into 10ˣ.
Examples (degrees): sin 30° = 0.5 · cos⁻¹ 0.5 = 60 · log 1000 = 3 · ln e² = 2 · √2 = 1.4142135624 · 5! = 120 · 2¹⁰ = 1,024
Questions
Why is tan 90° an error?
tan 90° = sin 90° ÷ cos 90° = 1 ÷ 0, which has no value. The same goes for log 0 or the square root of a negative number.
How many digits does it show?
Twelve significant digits with Indian grouping (12,34,567.891), so 0.1 + 0.2 shows 0.3. Very large and very small answers use powers of ten: 1.5e+20 is 1.5 × 10²⁰.
