How FD interest is calculated
Banks add interest to a cumulative deposit every quarter, so it compounds four times a year:
Maturity = P × (1 + r ÷ 4) 4 × T
Example: ₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years matures at ₹1,41,478: ₹41,478 interest. With the interest paid out instead, you get ₹1,750 every quarter and the ₹1,00,000 back at the end.
Good to know
- Deposits shorter than six months earn simple interest.
- FD interest is taxable income; banks deduct TDS once a year's interest crosses the limit.
- Breaking an FD early usually costs a penalty on the rate.
Questions
Cumulative or payout: which is better?
Cumulative earns more, because the interest itself earns interest. A quarterly payout suits you if you need a regular income from the deposit.
