How inflation is worked out
For the past, the calculator uses the Cost Inflation Index (CII) that the Central Board of Direct Taxes notifies every year for capital gains, with 2001-02 = 100. An amount from one year, in another year's money:
worth = amount × CII(later year) ÷ CII(earlier year)
The average yearly inflation over those T years:
(CII(later) ÷ CII(earlier)) 1 ÷ T − 1
For the future, at an assumed yearly inflation i (6% = 0.06) for T years:
future cost = cost × (1 + i) T
And what an amount will buy then, at today's prices:
buying power = amount ÷ (1 + i) T
Example: ₹1,00,000 in 2001-02 is worth ₹3,84,000 in 2026-27 (384 ÷ 100), an average of 5.53% a year. From 2010-11 it is ₹2,29,940, 5.34% a year. Looking ahead, what costs ₹1,00,000 today will cost ₹1,79,085 in 10 years at 6%, and ₹1,00,000 kept as cash will then buy only ₹55,839 worth of today's goods.

Good to know
- By law the CII follows about three-quarters of the rise in consumer prices (CPI, urban), so shop prices, school fees and hospital bills have usually risen faster than it shows.
- The index starts in 2001-02: older years are out of range. For property bought before 1 April 2001, tax law lets you use its fair market value on that date as the cost.
- Rule of 70: divide 70 by the inflation rate to see roughly how many years prices take to double (about 12 years at 6%).
- Savings beat inflation only if they earn more than it after tax: a 7% deposit taxed at 30% earns 4.9%, below 6% inflation.
Questions
What is the Cost Inflation Index used for?
Indexation: raising what you paid for land, a building or other long-term assets by the CII, so that only the real gain is taxed. Since 23 July 2024 it matters mainly for land and buildings bought before that date: resident individuals and HUFs can pay 20% tax with indexation or 12.5% without, whichever is lower.
When is the next index notified?
The CBDT usually notifies the index for a financial year early in that year, between April and July. 2026-27 is the latest one (384); this page is updated when the next is out.
Which inflation rate should I assume for the future?
6% a year is a fair long-run guess for everyday costs in India. For a child's education or medical costs, try 8% to 10%, as they have tended to rise faster.
